Closing the Food Equity Gap

Food equity is the idea that all people in a community should have access to nutritious, affordable, and culturally appropriate foods regardless of their zip code, race, gender, or income.

What is Food Equity?

Double SNAP at the Farmers Market

We’re dedicated to increasing the buying power of families utilizing SNAP benefits.  We work with the United Way of the Piedmont to provide the “Double-SNAP” program.

In 2017, our “Double-SNAP” program put $43,000 of healthy food on the tables of low-income families. The $43,000 spent went directly to our vendors and local farmers, supporting our city’s small business and agricultural industry.

Once signed up for the federal SNAP program, you are eligible for Hub City Roots “Double SNAP” program. This means that for every $1 you spend at the Farmers’ market, you’ll receive an additional $1 (up to $40).

We also work with the Department of Social Services to provide the “Healthy Bucks” program. This gives families using SNAP benefits an additional $15 to spend on fruits and vegetables if they put at least $5 on your EBT card.

The "Fresh Stops" refrigerator program is a collaborative effort between the City of Spartanburg, PAL, and Hub City Roots. The program aims to improve food accessibility in Spartanburg by providing fresh foods directly to communities that have been historically marginalized. You can find our Fresh Stops housed at CC Woodson Community Center and the Dr. TK Gregg Community Center.
